Acne is a condition of the skin. It affects mainly the face and upper trunk and involves the base of hairs. Hormonal acne -It is called hormonal acne because of the way the skin problem develops in response to hormonal changes.

It’s probably hormonal acne if…

  1. You are not in your teens

  2. The breakout occurs at the same time each month

  3. You are very stressed

  4. The breakout occurs at the same spot;Chin area, jawline

  5. The breakouts are neither whitehead nor blackhead but deep painful cysts.

Causes

Sensitivity to Androgen

When it comes to acne, the androgen in charge is testosterone. Men and women both produce testosterone (and estrogen) and both sexes need it. But women are often sensitive to extraneous testosterone in their bodies because they can’t use it for their typical functioning.

Production of the hormone testosterone rises during puberty. This causes greasy skin because it increases production of sebum, the oily substance secreted at the base of hairs to protect and lubricate the skin.Sebum can then clog the follicle and cause the breakout to be even worse.

So, think you’ve got hormonal acne? Here’s how to treat it.

  1. Cleansing

The hormonal acne treatment pyramid starts with good cleanser. Choose an option with salicylic or glycolic acid to help exfoliate the skin.

2. Anti-androgen drugs

These oral therapies help reduce the amount of excess androgens (primarily male hormones) that can cause hormonal acne.

Anti-androgen drugs, such as the Spironolactone pill, work by blocking androgen receptors to decrease the actions and effects of testosterone in the body.

When given at low doses, Spironolactone works very well to improve cystic acne and decrease overall oil production in the skin.

3. Increase Vitamin A intake

Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that helps combat free radicals. Free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which can change the environment of your sebaceous glands (those glands under the skin that produce oil), which can make it easier for P. acnes bacteria to collect and form blemishes.

Vitamin A helps acne by reducing the amount of sebum your skin produces, meaning it can be a wonderful option for anyone who deals with oily and combination skin—both skin types that are prone to acne breakouts.
